Photo Emulation: Andreas Gursky

Andreas Gursky grew up and currently resides in Germany. His subject matter focused on crowded areas of people some of the time, but mainly crowded places overrun by chaos and brightly colored objects. Though chaotic, there is always some form of organization in the placement or position of the objects. The main subject matter is normally quite simple places that deal with industry. The photos tend to be "bottom heavy" because the majority of the subject is in the bottom two thirds of the photo. If not, his photos always seem to draw attention to the bottom center area of each photograph. Andreas was drawn to large, anonymous, man made spaces like high rises, office lobbies, stock exchanges, and the interiors of "big box" retailers. His work is straightforward but is intended to overwhelm the viewer. I chose this artist because his work is colorful, chaotic and original, yet the composition always has the sense of organization. I am emulating Andreas Gursky's work without photo manipulation as it was before 1990, but the type of image and subject matter like his work in the late 90's, early 2000's.

I chose to work with a similar subject matter, style, composition, and lighting but without the use of photo manipulation. The theme is also similar because though my photograph is taken later and in a different location, it is in an industry setting with the same kind of organization of the product and with the use of the rule of thirds, "bottom heavy" style Andreas used. I also find it clever that i found a store in which everything was $9.99 to directly relate to Andreas Gursky's 99 cent store only with a modern twist.
